My Story:  Dick Shaftic

After high school, I enlisted in the marines and became an air traffic  controller with the 3rd Marine Air Wing stationed at Opa Locka, FL. After the  service, I worked for the FAA as an air traffic controller for 34 years,  spending the last 29 years at Chicago‑O'Hare, before retiring in 1992. Since  then I have worked part time as an instructor for a company that won the  contract to provide the controller training at O'Hare for the FAA.  I only  work in the winter and take the summers off to go boating. I job share with  another retiree who returns to Florida for the winter months.

I married Pat Perritt (Monroe '54) in 1955 and we were divorced in 1984.   Pat was killed in an auto accident in 1992 while returning from a visit with  our daughter in St. Louis. A driver fell asleep, crossed the median and hit  her head‑on. Altogether we had three daughters. Two live in the area near me  and one lives in St. Louis. I have seven grand kids (5 in the area and 2 in  St. Louis). My daughters and their families are my greatest treasure. While I  have dated occasionally, I have not remarried.
